Solutions help line was setup up to help Cocaine addicts or family/friends of
cocaine addiction users to get help to find cocaine addiction treatment. This
is a no cost service with Cocaine addiciton counselors standing by to do a case
assessment on the phone or by sending in a email request for help by the
cocaine addiciton treatment referral. Even though many law
enforcement policies and officials refer to cocaine addiction as a narcotic
addiction, this is incorrect. Narcotics is a term used to refer to those
substances that bind opiate receptors and produce morphine-like effects. This
includes the entire class of opiates and some other drugs as well. Cocaine
addiction is the addiction to a stimulant. Derived from the coca leaves,
cocaine has some numbing effects on the areas where it comes into direct
contact, but its major physiological effects are similar to amphetamines or
speed.
Cocaine was purported to be a non-addictive substance, which is
one of the reasons that it became so popular in the 1980s. However, all
substances that overly stimulate the pleasures centers of the brain will have
an addictive quality and well as the feeling of withdrawal symptoms when one
ceases to use the drug. Cocaine addiction and its withdrawals are not as
painful as those symptoms that come from narcotic addiction, since the user
does not have the flu symptoms, cramps and other painful manifestations seen in
opiate withdraw. However, cocaine addiction depletes the body of its endorphins
by overly stimulating the production of these feel good
neurohormones. Therefore, after using cocaine for an extended period of time,
as seen in cocaine addiction, the user is more likely to experience emotional
crashes and depression, sometimes leading to full blown psychotic episodes.
This is not the case with narcotic addiction.
Because of the short
half-life of cocaine, a persons suffering from cocaine addiction will be seen
taking the drug multiple times within an hours time. Crack cocaine is
produced from cocaine so that it can release the psychoactive components of
cocaine in a more concentrated form, which is then inhaled as a smoke to
achieve quick access to the blood, through the lungs vascular system and
from there it is taken to the pleasure center in the brain. After this rush is
felt, the user immediately wants to experience this feeling again. With each of
these uses, the brain is being altered from its natural homeostasis, which
tends to make the person using crack, irrational, psychotic and emotionally
labile. |
